Abstract

The article presents a theoretical analysis of the psychological factors determining military personnelʼs motivation for recovery after combat injuries. The relevance of the study is driven by the increasing number of service members injured during the full-scale war in Ukraine who require comprehensive medical and psychological rehabilitation. It is argued that rehabilitation outcomes largely depend on intrinsic motivation, which promotes active participation in treatment, psychological recovery, and social reintegration.

The paper examines contemporary theoretical approaches to motivation, including Self-Determination Theory and the concepts of self-efficacy, psychological resilience, and post-traumatic growth. It is established that motivation for recovery is shaped by psychological resilience, self-efficacy, the value-semantic sphere of personality, social support, professional identity, and the ability to reinterpret traumatic experiences. The study identifies major psychological barriers to rehabilitation, including PTSD, depressive symptoms, anxiety, social isolation, helplessness, and loss of future life prospects. Particular attention is paid to the role of psychological support in fostering intrinsic motivation, strengthening personal resources, and enhancing confidence in oneʼs capabilities. The need to develop individualized psychological support programmes tailored to the nature of combat injuries and the personal characteristics of military personnel is emphasized. It is concluded that strengthening motivation for recovery is essential for improving the effectiveness of the medical, psychological, and social rehabilitation of military personnel following combat injuries.
